ORLANDO, FLA., November 17, 2009: When baseball stars take to the golf links, you can be sure of fun and surprises – all the elements that made the Second Annual Florida Collegiate Summer League Celebrity Golf Tournament on November 16 a resounding success.
Held at the Interlachen Country Club in Winter Park, the tournament raised more than $25,000 for the Florida Collegiate Summer League (Florida League), a wood bat baseball league with five teams in Central Florida – and a client of Technetium Advertising & Web Design. The amount was double what was raised during last year’s inaugural tournament.
The Florida League is one of eight leagues affiliated with the National Alliance of College Summer Baseball (NACSB) – an alliance of college summer wood bat leagues which operate under NCAA legislation. It is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation funded in part by Major League Baseball.
Celebrity golfers included Davey Johnson – legendary World Series-winning MLB manager who coached the Florida League’s DeLand Suns during the 2009 season before signing with the Sanford River Rats as 2010 season coach. Former MLB star pitcher and Leesburg Lightning coach Frank Viola, Jr. also lent his talent to the event.
Turning up the star wattage was Kansas City Royals pitcher Zack Greinke, winner of the 2009 Cy Young Award; Houston Astros outfielder Hunter Pence; and Astros interim manager Dave Clark – who wowed the crowd by hitting a hole-in-one.
As the Florida League’s agency of record, Technetium designed promotional and collateral materials for the tournament, and worked closely with the organization throughout the planning stages. We would like to thank Kevin Davidson, assistant coach for the 2009 DeLand Suns and financial advisor for UBS – for leading the committee to produce a successful event that will ensure another year of providing valuable experience to college baseball players.
